In Florida, a police officer who was supposed to be honored at a Mothers Against Drunk Driving awards banquet in July was too drunk to accept his award, according to several Florida television stations. Michael Szeliga, a deputy from Pinellas County, allegedly picked up a bottle of Irish whiskey before driving across the state to Fort Lauderdale with two other deputies.

The officers traveled to Fort Lauderdale for two days of special DUI training, and Szeliga was also supposed to receive an award from MADD for making more than a hundred DUI arrests, according to WFLA News. An internal affairs investigation revealed that Szeliga and two other deputies allegedly skipped out of the DUI training after the first break, returned to their hotel room, and began drinking. Later in the day, an officer from Pasco County allegedly witnessed Szeliga wandering through the hotel intoxicated and wearing “nothing but boxer shorts.” Szeliga didn’t commit any criminal offense, but when his supervisor smelled alcohol on his breath, he ordered Szeliga to return to his room and miss the banquet – and his award. Szeliga also received one day of suspension for violating the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office “Standard of Conduct.”
